What is FreeScout?
FreeScout is a free, open-source, self-hosted help desk and shared-inbox platform. It is a self-hosted alternative to tools like Help Scout and Zendesk: you run it on your own server, so your customer conversations and data stay with you.
What FreeScout does
FreeScout turns one or more email addresses into a shared workspace where a whole team can handle customer support together. The core building blocks are:
- Shared mailboxes: connect a support address (for example
help@yourcompany.com) so every incoming email becomes a conversation your team can see and reply to from one place. - Conversations and tickets: each customer thread is tracked with a status, assignee, and full history, so nothing slips through the cracks.
- Multiple agents and teams: invite as many users as you need, assign conversations, and leave internal notes that the customer never sees.
- Email integration: works with standard email (IMAP/SMTP), so replies go out as normal email and threads stay in sync.
- Modules and extensions: a module system lets you add features on top of the core help desk without forking it.
Self-hosted and open source
FreeScout is open source and you host it yourself, on your own server or VPS. There is no per-agent SaaS subscription, and because the data lives on infrastructure you control, your customer conversations never have to leave your environment. You can read more on the official FreeScout site or browse the source on GitHub.
Where ReplyRabbit fits in
ReplyRabbit is a FreeScout module. It adds AI on top of the help desk you already run:
- AI draft replies: a suggested response written from the conversation, ready for you to review, edit, and send.
- Suggested next actions: a short checklist of what to do for each ticket.
- Linear tickets: turn a conversation into a Linear issue without leaving FreeScout.
- Slack notifications: get notified in Slack when there is something to look at.
