ReplyRabbit vs Front AI
Front and ReplyRabbit both live in a shared inbox, which makes them easier to compare than most help desk pairs. Front is a hosted collaborative inbox with AI features for drafting and summarising. ReplyRabbit is a module that adds AI drafts, next actions and issue handoffs to FreeScout, which is itself a self-hosted shared inbox. You'd choose Front for the platform and its collaboration tools. You'd choose ReplyRabbit to keep FreeScout and get the AI part without moving.

Two shared inboxes, two hosting models
FreeScout and Front share the same idea: several people work one inbox, with assignments, internal notes and a clear owner per thread. The difference is that FreeScout runs on your server and Front runs on the vendor's.
That changes what "AI" means in each one. Front's AI is part of the hosted service, so your email content is processed within Front's platform. ReplyRabbit sends the conversation to whichever provider you configure per mailbox, and on the Pro plan that can be a local Ollama or LM Studio model, in which case nothing leaves your network.
Feature comparison
| Capability | ReplyRabbit in FreeScout | Front AI |
|---|---|---|
| Draft replies | Yes, saved as FreeScout drafts for an agent to send | Yes, within Front |
| Who replies get addressed to | Smart reply routing: whoever wrote last, copying only the people they kept on the thread | Front's own reply handling |
| Rewrite a draft | One click to make it nicer, shorter or more direct | Front's editing tools |
| Follow-up tasks | Next Actions checklist on each ticket (Pro) | Front's task and comment features |
| Engineering handoff | Linear, GitHub or Jira issue written for developers (Pro), automatic on Team | Through Front's integrations |
| Model choice | OpenAI on Free; all providers and local models on Pro | The vendor's AI |
| Languages | Drafts and settings in 17 languages | Depends on Front |
Front has collaboration features FreeScout doesn't try to match, such as its calendar and multi-channel timeline. If those are why you're looking at Front, ReplyRabbit doesn't change that calculation.
Why reply routing matters in a shared inbox
Shared inboxes get messy when a thread has a customer, a reseller and a colleague all copied in. Reply to the wrong person and you've either leaked an internal note or dropped the customer from their own thread.
ReplyRabbit handles this before the agent sees the draft. It replies to whoever wrote last and copies in only the people that person kept on the thread. The agent can still change recipients, but the default is right, which is the whole point of a first draft.

Cost and control
Front is priced per seat, and the AI features come with the plan you're on. ReplyRabbit is a flat monthly plan per tier, and you pay your AI provider separately for the tokens you use. For a small team that runs a local model, the AI usage line can be zero.
Control works differently too. ReplyRabbit never sends a reply on its own. Auto Draft prepares a draft when a new email arrives, and Team-plan automation can create an issue tracker item, but a customer only ever hears from an agent who pressed send.
How to decide
- Already on FreeScout: install the free build, connect OpenAI, and try ten real tickets. How to set up ReplyRabbit covers the settings that make drafts sound like your team.
- Already on Front: ReplyRabbit can't help; it only runs inside FreeScout. Evaluate Front's AI on your own tickets.
- Choosing a shared inbox from scratch: decide on hosting first. If self-hosting matters, FreeScout plus ReplyRabbit is the combination to trial. If not, Front is a reasonable hosted option.
